Spring break in a box!
Carrot Cake donut from Hello Donuts in Sawyer Michigan.
Hello Donuts located in Sawyer, MI.
While many of my co-workers and students are spending their spring breaks working on their suntans, I am working during my week off. On the list: renovation projects and new items to blog about. Today is Monday, the first official day of break and I already have items checked off my list. We started work on our guest bedroom this past Saturday and today we went on a food adventures with friends. Both have been super relaxing and have yet to feel like real work. Our first stop on the food adventure trip was a place I was introduced to by my sweet friend Margaret Potuck, who as owner of Happy Dance Cupcakes, and a reliable source on desserts.
After checking out Hello Donuts on their Facebook page and website I was hooked. Somewhere between their about me section that described how they got their love and knowledge of the kitchen from their Grandma (just like me!) As well, the fact they have their own coffee blend from Uncommon Roasters, I knew this is what I wanted to do on my spring break.
We planned our trip for Monday and left early. Not only did we have about a 75 minute drive, their Facebook told us that many days they sell out. In the artsy town of Sawyer we found the cheery cabin in the woods with their signature logo out front. From my picture you can tell it was a spring is just starting to arrive in the mitten but inside the shop is was warm and of course smelled like coffee and donuts!!!
You know that feeling when you go over to a friend's house for a cup of coffee and there is no rush? Just sitting back in your chair, relaxing with good conversation to the point you don't think about the time or what is on your twitter feed. Thats how it felt in Sara and Stacey's shop, Hello Donuts was inviting and relaxing. When you have food that good and friends to share it with, spring break doesn't need have palm trees or a shopping trip on Michigan Ave., sometimes the best spring break can be glazed, topped with pecans and come in a box!
Sara and Stacey being great hosts and making us feel right at home!
Our game plan was to buy one of each, split it four ways and enjoy!
We tried the following doughnuts (the menu changes each day):
- Churro
- Creme Brûlée
- Carrot Cake
- Confessions (a chocolate lover's dream)
- Raspberry Beret
We brought three extra home with us for breakfast tomorrow...if they make it that long. Thanks to Sara and Stacey for their wonderful hospitality and for the yummy breakfast. We will be back next time we head up the Gold Coast!
