Off the Menu: Dor-tee's Drive-In

You only get one chance at being a kid, then you get the rest of your life trying to find those things that make you feel that way again. That feeling of care free, relaxed and sometimes slightly giddiness that takes you back to being seven. For me finding this feeling is a life long adventure, I have also found that this hunt more times than not ends with ice cream for me, no complaints.

When we first started dating, my Husband introduced me to one of the places that takes him on that memory roller coaster and it quickly became a favorite of mine, and yes it does include ice cream.

Downtown Alexandria, Indiana

Dor-tee's Drive In is located in cozy Alexandria, Indiana. About 45 miles northeast of Indianapolis, Alexandria is also known for the home town of Bill and Gloria Gaither (another family connection) as well as the world's largest ball of paint.  Sadly Alexandria just lost a few of its old, brick buildings due to the condition they were in. The ones that are left standing are still full of the character and the charm they were built with, telling stories of days gone by.  Life just seems to move a little slower in Alex, which makes it a perfect spot to stop and get a root beer float or a lemon ice cream cone.

My Husband's connection to this drive-in is that his Grandparents bough it in the 50's as a Tasty Freeze and renamed it to sound like their last name is pronounced. Besides my Husband's Grandpa being a policeman and driving the school bus they ran this store with heart and soul. It was only open in the spring and summer months but during the holiday season they used the parking lot to sell Christmas trees. I have wrote about in a previous post that my husband's Grandma is a great cook and to this day, even in her mid 80's, can make a mean burger and shake.

Trevor's Grandpa the original "Mr. Dor-Tee"

While Dor-Tee's has changed owners a few times since his Grandparents have retired the name has stayed the same and the menu has seen only a few changes. One staple that is still found is the lemon ice cream cones, one of my all-time favorites.  Just like any small town town drive-in should, they offer an all-time Indiana favorite with the fried pork tenderloin or its given name, the Big Ten Tenderloin.  Other favorites include fish tail sandwich, cheeseburgers smothered in Cheez-Wiz, and the toasty burger.  Also if you are eating any of these options you need to have a drink to go with, besides root beer floats, Dor-Tee's does a great job of doctoring up your fountain drink.  Some worthwhile flavors are vanilla, marshmallow or chocolate coke.

When I’m not longer rapping, I want to open up an ice cream parlor and call myself Scoop Dogg.

And in honor of this month being national ice cream month a whole list of flavors for malts and shakes:
