Master Bedroom

A photo tour of our master bedroom.

We refinished the hardwood floors ( you can read about that here) and the walls were painted right before we moved in. After a huge Ikea trip we added most of the furniture, curtains, and bedding to finish the look. Our bedroom opens to a sunroom that has french doors, there used to be a hallway/closet in our room a long time ago which is where one to the three doors opened to the sunroom.. It was really visible before we re-did the floors, having two types of wood, running opposite directions and you can still see this on the wall closest to the headboard of our bed.  After we re-did the floors it was less obvious, but we kept all three doors for the light and originality of the room.

Our color pallet for the room was a play off of the classic American red, white, and blue color scheme. Small red accents bright up deep purple/blues and creamy white linens.  Our floors are stained with pickled oak stain from Sherwin Williams that whitens and softens them.

In the sunroom on the bookshelf is some treasures, one of them is a police badge belonging to my Husband's Grandfather.

These old buildings do not belong to us only, they belong to our forefathers and they will belong to our descendants unless we play them false. They are not in any sense our own property to do with as we like with them. We are only trustees for those that come after us.

As we worked with our master bedroom, just like every other room, we made it ours by what we put in it. We kept it original by keep the structure and floors original to the best of our ability.

This door behind the dresser goes into another bedroom, since we do not use it we have chosen to cover it with the dresser for now. One day we will possibly turn it into a built in.

The picture in this black frame (above, left)  is actually a paper sack from a store in Indianapolis.  The small bag was found when we remodeled our bathroom upstairs. My older brother found it while fixing some plumbing issues, there were some random items hid under the floor boards and one of those was this 11'' x 4'' bag.  I keep joking with my Husband that every project we do that involves cutting into a wall or floor that we are going to find a jar of money. While that would be awesome I don't mind settling for a little glimpse into the past of our house.  I am on a continuos search for answers as to who built this house, who lived here, why is a certain design element the way it is, what exactly is original? Finding this bag was like a little insight into the people who lived here before us. Most possibly the family who lived here in the 20's that added on the two story sunroom were also the ones who bought some items from this store in Indy.  We found a date and name of the installer on the bathtub dating it to mid 20's. It paints a great picture: A family (the father was the school superintendent according to library public records) with solid incomes during the roaring 20's. They add on addition and bring indoor plumbing to their house just a few block from downtown. It makes my heart happy.

 The printing on it reads:

The Carter Co.

Haberdashers

Carter's Corner

58 Monumental Circle Indianapolis, IND.

Counting the three french doors in our bedroom we have a grand total of 9 french doors in our house. All containing 15 panels of handblown glass, many of which are extremely wavy and contain tiny little bubbles showing how original they really are.

The sunrooms in our house have double windows, with the outside windows opening out and the inside windows opening in. So far it has proved to keep the rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The only downside we have found is the difficulty to have screens for them. All the knobs are original with a metal turn know on all the outside windows. These match the rest of the windows in the house as well as the built-in china cabinets have glass front doors in the dinning room.  The inside windows all have circular wooden knobs that match the downstairs sunroom as well.
